Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the examinations performed?

Inside your doctor's office or in your work place in a private room. Our mammography units are compact enough to fit easily in elevators and through standard doorways. Our service ranges from the greater Seattle area to as far as Vashon and Orcas Islands, east of the mountains, as well as several clinics along the Washington Coast.

How do I arrange for Imaging Associates to come to my business or clinic to perform a Mammogram Clinic?

Contact Martha Fulton at (206)467-1949 or martha@imagingassociatesinc.com and we would be happy to discuss providing our on-site mammography service.

How long do you stay at a clinic site?

Usually one business day.  If there is a need, we are happy to stay and perform mammograms the following day in order to accomodate all the patients.

How long does an examination take?

The mammogram itself only takes a few minutes. Most patients are in the exam room with the technologist for less than 15 minutes.

Who will be performing the exams?

An experienced female mammography technologist will perform your mammogram. The technologists are all employees of Imaging Associates, Inc. and work under the direction of Ken S. Heilbrunn, M.D. All technologists are Registered by the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists, are WA State Certified, are current on Continuing Education credits as mandated by the MQSA, and have specialized training in mammography.

Who will interpret the mammography films?

Dr. Heilbrunn and his staff of Board Certified Radiologists will be reading yor films. All of our Radiologists are Certified by the FDA and meet all ACR requirements to read mammograms. They have taken the advqanced training course from Dr. Lazlo Tabar, the world's pre-eminent Radiologist-Mammographer.

Imaging Associates also implements Computer-aided detection (CAD). This is a sophisticated pattern recognition software system. This software identifies features in medical images and brings them to the attention of the Radiologist. They are a "second pair of eyes".

How do I receive the exam results and when can I expect them?

Typically a report will be sent to your provider within 3-5 business days. Patients will receive a letter in the mail within 5-7 days from the date of the exam.

Patients whose results are not clearly negative and need additional testing should contact their healthcare provider. They will recommend where you need to go for follow-up care.

At what age should I get a Mammogram?

The American Cancer Society recommends that most women have their first mammogram at age 40 and annually after that. Your current breast health status and family history can change this schedule. Consult with your healthcare provider what time frame is best for you.

Are there any special preparations for a Mammogram?

Before your exam, avoid using deodorant, powder, perfume or lotions on your breasts or in your under arm area. You will probably be more comfortable if you wear a skirt or slacks to your appointment, as you will be requested to remove all clothing above the waist. A gown will be provided for you during the exam.

Be prepared to inform your technologist of any previous breast surgeries, when and where your previous mammogram was done, any symptoms you're having or any moles that may show up on the exam, as these can be marked for clarification.

What is the cost of the mammogram and do you accept insurance?

We accept and bill all local insurance companies and don't collect a co-pay. The cost of a Mammogram is $183. Please note that some plans do not cover the full cost of the mammogram or require you to meet an annual deductible before payments will be made. In such cases, you or your supplemental insurance carrier will be accountable for payment.

Are the Mammogram films developed on site?

No. Laws require us to develop the films within our office in downtown Seattle.

What if my results say I need further evaluation?

We can perform some of the recomended special views, which can be done during our next site visit. Or you may choose to have your follow up evaluation done at another facility that your healthcare provider chooses. Ultrasound evaluations must be performed at a breast care center.

How often is further evaluation  required?

Additional evaluation is required about 3% of the time.

What about my prior Mammograms?

Be prepared to provide the technologist with the exact name and address of your most recent prior Mammograms, as well as the approximate date they occured.

What if there is a lump or some other symptom?

Imaging Associates can perform mammograms on patients that present with symptoms. Give the technologist as much information about your symptoms as you can.  If the mammogram results fail to explain the symptoms, the resulting report will address the symptom and convey special recomendations.  It will be up to the patient and her provider to decide how to proceed.

Do I need to see one of the Provider's at the clinics you visit?

It depends on the clinic. Some clinics where we provide on-site service prefer you are an 'active' patient of their providers, while some will allow us to perform mammograms on any patient who needs one. Please call our office at (206)467-1949 and we can assist in finding an office in your area where you can receive your exam.

I don't have any health  insurance. Is there any place that offers free mammograms?

Yes. Washington state offers a program called the Breast and Cervical Health Plan of Washington (BCHPW), which provides free mammograms to women who meet certain criteria. Call our office at (206)467-1949 and we would be happy to guide you to a clinic that offers this free service.

In addition to Mammography, what else should I do to help ensure good health?

Women should have an annual checkup Breast Screening Exam by her provider. Additionally, you should examine your breasts monthly using the breast self-exam (BSE) technique. If you do not know how to do a BSE ask your provider to show you. Also see our Breast Health Page referring to BSE and breast health. Remember, a good health program includes: (1) an annual exam by your provider, (2) regular BSE and (3) Mammography.
